What is this Non-Sense?

In this blog series we try to decode the most hyped technology of our time without losing our minds (or sense of humor) in the process. While tech experts are busy explaining how the machine works, I'm more interested in why it thinks the way it does and what that reveals about us. No PhD required to follow along (Cause even I don't have one). Any technical jargon will be translated to human, I promise.

Why This Blog?

AI safety is a critical topic that somehow still isn't getting enough attention. Researchers estimate that the catastrophic risk from AI ranges from 3% - 50%. (80,000 Hours). Most AI experts advise 10% on average, that means if AI safety were a game of Russian roulette, we'd be spinning the chamber with one bullet in every ten slots.

For comparison, when scientists were working on the first atomic bomb, they seriously debated whether detonating it could ignite the Earth's atmosphere and wipe out humanity. Their estimated odds? One in a million. (Advanced Science News)

So just to recap:

  • Nuclear bomb? 0.0001% chance of ending the world. People freaked out.
  • AI? 10% chance of ending the world. We're using it to generate cat pictures.

Something doesn't add up.
